The American Society for Environmental History (ASEH) is committed to strengthening relationships with faculty and students from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), including but not limited to Hispanic, Asian, and Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. To support this goal, ASEH has launched the ASEH Fellows Program to provide support for full-time faculty as they pursue initiatives in environmental history related to research, teaching, and community engagement.

Fellowship Opportunities

We are now accepting applications for the 2027 ASEH Fellows Program. This year, two fellows will be selected to receive: 1) A one-year ASEH membership, which includes: access to our quarterly journal, Environmental History, along with back issues and other electronic resources; a subscription to our quarterly e-newsletter, ASEH News; and additional member benefits and resources. And 2) $1,500 in funding, which can be applied toward one or a combination of the following professional development initiatives:

• Travel Grant for the 2027 ASEH Annual Conference: Fellows are encouraged to use the funding to cover travel expenses for the 2027 ASEH Annual Conference, scheduled to take place from March 31-April 3, 2027 in Richmond, Virginia. The Annual Conference offers a unique opportunity to connect face-to-face with a diverse community of educators and scholars, explore different perspectives in environmental history, and engage in valuable networking. Fellows choosing to attend the conference will also receive complimentary registration. 

• Support for publication costs, manuscript workshops, teaching, or outreach initiatives: Fellows may also use the funding to support initiatives such as developing new courses or teaching materials, covering publication fees, organizing manuscript workshops with ASEH members, enhancing community engagement through outreach projects, or pursuing other activities that foster connections with ASEH members and initiatives. We encourage applicants to consider how these funds can amplify the connections between their work, communities, institutions, and ASEH’s network and resources.

• A short CV (2 pages)

• A statement of interest outlining the applicant’s work and interests in environmental history that details how they plan to use the funds. The statement should describe specific initiatives the funds will support, explaining how they will engage with ASEH's network and resources, and/or indicate whether the funds will be used to attend the 2027 Conference.
