Virginia State Capitol

Designed by Thomas Jefferson, the State Capitol houses America’s oldest legislative assembly. Daily one-hour guided tours showcase historical statuary and paintings, rare exhibit objects, and newly restored legislative chambers.

Richmond is the capital of Virginia and one of the oldest major cities in the United States. It sits in central Virginia, about 90 miles south of Washington, DC. Richmond is filled with historic sites and stories at nearly every turn. Key landmarks include the Virginia State Capitol, designed by Thomas Jefferson; the church where Patrick Henry famously declared, “Give me liberty or give me death,” a moment that helped ignite the Revolutionary War; and sites tied to the city’s role in early American religious freedom. The city also reflects its Civil War history at places like the White House of the Confederacy, which served as the residence of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Literary history is also present at the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, dedicated to the life and work of Edgar Allan Poe, and known for its regular “Unhappy Hours.”

Today’s Richmond features a wide mix of neighborhoods, ranging from historic urban districts to expanding suburban communities. In the city’s historic core, areas like Shockoe Slip and The Fan showcase preserved architecture, walkable streets, and a strong sense of local character. The Museum District is another key area, known for its concentration of cultural institutions and galleries, while nearby Church Hill offers some of the city’s oldest homes and sweeping views over downtown. On the other side of the city, growing communities like Manchester reflect ongoing redevelopment and revitalization along the riverfront. In the surrounding suburbs, areas such as Midlothian and Glen Allen provide residential neighborhoods with more suburban living while still connecting closely to the Richmond metropolitan area.
