We are pleased to invite you to the upcoming seminar of the Entangled Histories series, Borders and Sustainability: Human and Natural Resources across Time and Space, taking place on Thursday, 5 November 2026, at 6:00 PM CET.
Our guest speaker, Dr. Scott Doebler, Assistant Professor of History at the University of Wyoming, will explore the environmental history of the Maya Forest following the Spanish invasion of the Petén in 1697.
Challenging conventional narratives of colonial conquest, the seminar will examine how Indigenous Maya communities maintained political, cultural, and environmental continuity through their relationships with the tropical forest. Drawing on archival sources in Spanish, English, and Yucatec Maya, the presentation offers a new perspective on Indigenous resilience, colonial borderlands, and the entanglement of human and nonhuman histories.
