Event Description
For too long historians have de-coupled early US national park history from the Reconstruction Era following the American Civil War. During the war, the passage of the Yosemite Grant was an expression of national sovereignty and unity. After the war the US government pursued policies that damaged Indigenous communities in the West and attempted to enfranchise Blacks in the South. Congress also took advantage of Reconstruction’s expanded federal authority to establish and manage the 2-million-acre Yellowstone National Park. In this free webinar from the George Wright Society, Rolf Diamant, co-author (with Ethan Carr) of Olmsted and Yosemite, Civil War, Abolition and the National Park Idea, Megan Kate Nelson, author of Saving Yellowstone: Exploration and Preservation in Reconstruction America, and Adam Wesley Dean, author of An Agrarian Republic: Farming, Antislavery Politics, and Nature Parks in the Civil War Era, will provide a fresh perspective on the development of national parks in this larger context of a post-war America. Chris Barr, chief of interpretation at Reconstruction Era National Historical Park and Reconstruction Era National Historic Network, will moderate the panel discussion.
