Environmental History Week 2022 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Environmental History Week?

Environmental History Week is an international celebration of environmental history, organized by environmental historians of all stripes to foster scholarly collaboration, academic research, teaching and public awareness of environmental history.  ASEH invites you to organize an event in your community.

Is EHW 2022 separate from ASEH's annual conference?

Yes. EHW 2022 will be a few weeks after the conference during the week of Earth Day 2022 (April 22). EHW will emphasize in person, locally-organized, public-facing events that will engage historians and researchers and teachers of all levels, professionals, students, practitioners, and the general public. ASEH hopes that each year EHW will inspire and activate people to celebrate and protect local institutions and environments.

ASEH 2022 in Eugene will take place in person March 23-26, 2022, and a number of panels will take place virtually in early April. The program committee constructed the program for ASEH 2022, and all panelists and panels that were accepted will have the opportunity to present in person, virtually, or both. There is still time to register for and attend ASEH 2022. Registration includes in person events and the virtual events in early April.

What sorts of events can be affiliated with EHW?

Environmental History Week events can take many forms. In person, face-to-face events could be all-day mini-conferences; environmental history lectures on a campus or at a public library or museum; student presentations at a student research symposium; film series with audience discussions; field trips or tours, or hands-on projects in collaboration with non-profits in your area; or a teacher training program for local K-12, community college, or graduate students. Digital events could be virtual conferences conducted on an online, video conference platform; streamed films with online discussions; self-guided field trips; or a virtual museum exhibit. Programs for all audiences are welcome. If you have other ideas for events, please share them. ASEH will review, list, and promote any submitted event that aligns with the mission, values, and ethics of the Society.

Already planning an event for Earth Day 2022? Fill out the form and add it to the Environmental History Week events calendar.

Is there a minimum or maximum audience size needed for an EHW event?

No, an event can be as large or small as you envision.

What should I consider when organizing an event for EHW?

Organizers planning new events should consider what they would like achieve with an event and, in turn, audience, venue, participants, cost, potential partners, and funding that will help make it successful. Contingency plans are also important in current conditions.

We have put together a list of considerations that may help those planning an event, especially academic symposia.

How do I submit an event for the EHW Events Calendar?

Please join us by organizing an event in your area, and sending information to us so we can publicize it on the Environmental History Week events calendar on the ASEH.org website.  You can help diversify environmental history by inviting colleagues, scholars, and community-members who do not normally attend environmental history conferences to participate.  Find collaborators by posting on H-Environment, other H-Net lists and social media channels listed on the Environmental History Week website.

EHW coincides with Earth Day 2022 (April 22). Already have an Earth Day event planned or planning an event for Earth Day? Fill out the form to add it to the EHW events calendar?

Are the opportunities to sponsor Environmental History Week?

For sponsorship opportunities, please contact David Spatz at david.spatz@aseh.org.

How can I support ASEH and Environmental History Week?

ASEH itself will charge no registration or affiliation fees for Environmental History Week events (event organizers may charge). The best ways to support ASEH are to join or renew or donate.
