Film Screening & Book Release Party

Event Description
Community members and partners at Alma College and Central Michigan University (CMU) invite you to a book and film release party at the Wright-Leppien Opera House downtown Alma, Michigan. The anthology, "The PBB Disaster at 50: Reflections, Critical Lessons, and a Path Forward," is a collaborative volume grounded in community partnerships and extends the work and dialogue from the PBB Disaster at 50 Conference at Alma College last spring. We will also screen two short films on the disaster, one a highlight reel from the conference and the second by a group of public history students at CMU. The timing for the release party is special, as it marks the 50th anniversary of chemist-turned-farmer Ric Halbert and USDA scientist George Fries providing the state with irrefutable proof of the disaster--nearly nine months later. While we marked the 50th anniversary of the mix-up that led to the disaster last year, this spring we seek to celebrate community action and keep attention on the long-term impacts and legacy of our nation's largest episode of food contamination.
